Happy St. Patrick's Day

We had a very special day today! In the morning we went to West End to learn about history from a cowboy! Yes, a cowboy from New Jersey. He sung many songs to us and we sang and clapped along. He started with "This Land is Your Land" which is one of our favorite songs! It reminded us of Ms. Savage and music class. Then we learned how to yodle! And, might I add, we have some excellent yodlers in the classroom - Kavon and Ayanna! We were surprised to learn that this cowboy had visited 48 of the 50 states and we all sang "I've Been Everywhere" with him!

We celebrated St. Patrick's Day this afternoon by making Irish Potatoes! We rolled them into small potatoes then rolled them in cinnamon. Next was the best part! We all tasted the Irish Potatoes! And, guess what??? Everyone in the whole class liked them! After we ate the Irish potatoes we did a little bit of school work then had an impromptu party. Selena and her mom brought in cupcakes, Doritos, and juice for us! We enjoyed the nice fresh air and played outside! It was a great day, but we are ready to get back to work tomorrow!

March Goes in like a Lion...

We started the month of March with a snow day, so it certainly came in like a lion. We are really hoping it will go out like a lamb!
Last week we celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday by reading several of his stories and doing some fun activities.
Our poem of the week was an excerpt from "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish" and we all loved reciting it over and over. We even created a file of us reading it!
After we read "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish" we decided to try to create our own rhyming words. Once we completed the rhymes we painted pictures of our creations. They are displayed in our school, along with one of Dr. Seuss's characters from the book.
On Friday we read "Green Eggs and Ham" then enjoyed some! Our preschool buddy class made green eggs and ham earlier in the day and left us the ingredients...cool whip and mint chocolate chip ice cream! Since it was so nice on Friday it was the perfect treat! Pictures will be posted soon showcasing our works of art!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

January already???

We apologize for no entries in December...it was a very busy month both in and out of the classroom.
Some highlights from the month:
**We created an awesome door for the door decorating contest - we worked together to create a 3D snowman
**Our entire school focused on learning about Holidays around the world - we learned about Italy. We participated in a school wide parade where we displayed pictures of the Italian flag, an Italian boy and girl, and the Italian greeting "Buon Natale" which means Merry Christmas
**On our last day of school in 2008 we participated in a school wide game of JINGO! It was so much fun! We also sang many holiday tunes and painted ornaments for our parents.
**Our Fairytale Friday spanned the entire month with "The Gingerbread Man" We read several different versions of the story, including Gingerbread Fred, Gingerbread Baby, and Gingerbread Friends. We had the opportunity to make our own gingerbread man cookies, pictures and houses.

We came back on Monday and have been learning so much! Even though we enjoyed being off, we really missed being on a regular routine. This week we finished our Gingerbread Man focus by writing a class book about the Gingerbread Man. Stop by our room to see our awesome book and to discover all the things the Gingerbread Man can do!
Even though we did not make New Year's resolutions, we will continue to work hard everyday and try to update you on all of our learning experiences~

We are Thankful...

Last week during COW we created a video of our Thankful Turkeys. We made the turkeys with Mrs. Lenoff during speech and took it to the next level during COW. What a collaborative effort!

Goldilocks and the 3 Bears

Congratulations to Mrs. Birkhead's students on their performance in Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. Our preschool buddy class came to watch as well as Mrs. Henry, and Mrs. Breland. WOW! I think some students might have a future in acting!

We're Panwapa Kids Are you?

This week we have been exploring the site We created our own Panwapa kid, chose our favorite things, and created a house. We have also visited other Panwapa kids around the world. Marissa has a message from a Panwapa kid in Georgia, which is near Russia! Mrs. Birkhead has a friend from Sweden! Tungar, a native of Panwapa, took us on a treasure hunt. On the treasure hunt we had to find people who liked certain activities. It is exciting to check to see if people have visited us - so try to look for us on Panwapa!
We have also been practicing a Reader's Theater of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. We will be performing tomorrow for our Preschool Buddy class. We have spent a long time practicing our lines and making props.
Guess what? We had a pizza party today! It was great. Our pizza party celebrated Billy's great behavior. Mr. Jarrett delivered the pizzas and we all enjoyed the wonderful treat. Keep up the great behavior, Billy, We are so proud of you! Did you know we are going to have another pizza party soon? During red ribbon week we found the most red ribbons, so we will have another surprise pizza party!

November 19 already???

I am sorry we have been away. Mrs. Birkhead has been quite busy because she moved from Conshohocken, PA to Haddon Township, NJ! Even though there are still boxes all over the house she is happy to be closer to school.
This week we have COW in our classroom! For the past three days we have been exploring the site We created our own identities, chose our favorite things, and explored different parts of the world.
We are also getting excited for Thanksgiving. Last Friday we made double consonant ending words on turkey feathers and during speech we wrote 5 things we were thankful for. Next Tuesday we will be making turkey sandwiches to help celebrate Thanksgiving. We will wear our Indian headbands while we eat our turkey. When you see our headbands you will notice some students will have more feathers than others. We are given a feather for each day we have "green" behavior.

Halloween

Halloween was a great time!
We started our day with Fairytale Friday. Our Fairytale this week was Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. Mrs. Birkhead gave us clues to guess the story before we listened to an awesome version of the story. We listened to the story to help with our listening skills.
Thanks to es.com for the exciting version of the story.
Since it was Halloween we created our own version of a poison apple by making carmel apples in the crockpot. Mrs. Birkhead found the recipe on http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/10/crockpot-caramel-apples.html

We also voted today! Everyone had the opportunity to sit down at a computer and decide who should be our next president. We talked abut the importance of voting. At the end of the day we learned if we had a choice Barack Obama would be our next president. Since I am writing this post so late we now know Obama was elected our next president, so we were right!

Around 1:45 we changed into our Halloween costumes for our parade.
Billy was a ninja, Ayanna Mo was a witch, Ayanna Ma. was a vampire, Joey was a Powerranger, Shelley was Belle, Marissa was Ariel, Kavon was a football player, Destiney was a genie, Jalen was a police officer, and Gary was an Army soldier. Billy's mom, Ms. Tara came in to help us with our party. We had so much fun, and appreciate her help!

An Exciting Halloween Inspired Tuesday

We had such an exciting day yesterday! First, in speech class we read The Berenstein Bears and the Great Pumpkin. In the story, Papa Bear was trying to win the pumpkin contest for the biggest pumpkin. He took care of his pumpkin day in and day out. Even though Papa Bear didn't win the Great pumpkin award the Berenstein Bears still were proud of him. We used this story as an inspiration for our next activity. We decided to conduct our own pumpkin experiment! Mrs. Lenoff brought in five pumpkins and we predicted the pumpkins' weight in order from heaviest to lightest. Then five students were able to weigh the pumpkins in front of the class. Many people had the first or last pumpkin correct in his/her list, but no one had every single one in the correct order! After we weighed the pumpkins we wanted to know how many seeds were in each pumpkin. Mrs. Lenoff, Mrs. Waller, and Mrs. Birkhead cut the tops off the pumpkins and five more students were invited to scoop out all the pumpkin seeds. In the afternoon we used tally marks to count all of our seeds. We had almost 900 pumpkin seeds! It sure took us a long time to count, but the tally marks really helped us not lose track!
Mrs. Birkhead took the pumpkin seeds home with her and baked pumpkin seeds. We can't wait to try them today as a special snack!

We also worked with Miss Michele today on breaking the code of a secret message...Guess what it said??? What is scary on Halloween? We drew pictures and wrote sentences of the scariest things on Halloween! Many students drew ghosts, zombies, mummies, and witches!

We had a great day...only 10 more until Halloween!

A Look at Soil

Today we explored potting soil and sandy soil. We used maginfying glasses to see the soil, our noses to smell the soil, and our hands to touch the soil. We wrote down our findings, then created a Venn diagram to discuss the diferences between sandy soil and potting soil.

We had Chinese today. After Chinese we had our delicious snack of red grapes. They were tasty.

Ayanna, Kavon, Destiney, and Shelley used powerpoint to create a talking slide show of their spelling words. They sound great!

Ayanna, Destiney, and Shelley have been working hard with Mrs. Waller on reading a poem, "The Picnic" I am excited to hear it tomorrow.

It was another great day at Evergreen!

What does it mean to be Cool as a Cucumber?

Our vegetable of the day was cucumbers today. While we were enjoying our delicious snack (definietly not our favorite one so far) Mrs. Birkhead asked what it meant to be cool as a cucumber...many of us didn't know, but we know now! For those of you who don't know it means to be calm in a difficult situation.

We had speech this morning. We read a story and created a collage of things we see in the Woodbury neighborhood. Then we went to music. Mrs. Birkhead and Kavon modeled how to buddy read, and read a story about Vegetable Soup. It made us very hungry.

Thanks to Billy for writing the next part of the blog.
We played tag at recess today. I was a playground champion. We learned about neighborhoods.

After lunch we had math and writing. We wrote about cucumbers and neighborhoods in our journals today.

A Plum Day

Plums
They are sour
They are sweet
A juicy tasty treat
But don't eat the pit because Mrs. Birkhead will have a fit!

Today we enjoyed plums for our snack. Marissa loved her plum! We wrote in our journals at the end of the day about plums, and drew pictures.

We spent most of the day on reading and math. We hope to get to science tomorrow. We love to get on the computers, and thank Mrs. Dougherty for showing us Zoo Zillions last week.

Ayanna, Destiney, and Shelley read a poem about a picnic, drew a picture, and wrote a story about going on a picnic today. We can't wait to see their work.

Tag seems to be the class favorite at recess. Miss Denise continues to compliment us on our behavior, and has awarded playground champion slips to many of us. Congratulations to Marissa and Ayanna who both received free snacks today for their great work on the playground.

This Friday is a School wide Friday Fun Block Party. We hope we can all participate!

Wednesday

It was another exciting day in Room 9. Shelley, Marissa, and Jalen really liked learning dances in gym class today. They are practicing for the dance on September 25! You can expect to see some great dancers! We have learned the Chicken Dance, The Hokey Pokey, and the YMCA.

Mrs. Birkhead introduced students to some new websites today, and each student had the opportunity to try them out. I think the favorite website was when each student made a pumpkin. Destiney and Ayanna really liked the All About Me part of the website, and Joey created his own calendar to mark his birthday!

Ayanna learned how to write two digit numbers in math today. Kavon liked playing games in COW today.

We have had several playground champions the last couple days, let's keep up the great behavior!

Remember tonight is Back to School Night for Parents. Please remind them to come visit Mrs. Birkhead and our classroom!

Quite a Busy Tuesday

Tuesday began with our first speech lesson. We read a story about firefighters then discussed people who help us in the community. We traced our hand, chose a person who helps us in the community, and wrote or drew five facts about that person. Then, we had Chinese. Guess what? We had 8 playground champions at lunch today. Some students are on their way to a free snack! We had COW again today, and we finished writing our goals for the school year. We added our picture and a border. Our goals look great and will hang in the hallway!
Ayanna really enjoyed our small group math lesson today because we were counting so high! All the way to 510! WOW!!! Jalen learned to write his name in Chinese!
