An Exciting Halloween Inspired Tuesday

We had such an exciting day yesterday! First, in speech class we read The Berenstein Bears and the Great Pumpkin. In the story, Papa Bear was trying to win the pumpkin contest for the biggest pumpkin. He took care of his pumpkin day in and day out. Even though Papa Bear didn't win the Great pumpkin award the Berenstein Bears still were proud of him. We used this story as an inspiration for our next activity. We decided to conduct our own pumpkin experiment! Mrs. Lenoff brought in five pumpkins and we predicted the pumpkins' weight in order from heaviest to lightest. Then five students were able to weigh the pumpkins in front of the class. Many people had the first or last pumpkin correct in his/her list, but no one had every single one in the correct order! After we weighed the pumpkins we wanted to know how many seeds were in each pumpkin. Mrs. Lenoff, Mrs. Waller, and Mrs. Birkhead cut the tops off the pumpkins and five more students were invited to scoop out all the pumpkin seeds. In the afternoon we used tally marks to count all of our seeds. We had almost 900 pumpkin seeds! It sure took us a long time to count, but the tally marks really helped us not lose track!
Mrs. Birkhead took the pumpkin seeds home with her and baked pumpkin seeds. We can't wait to try them today as a special snack!

We also worked with Miss Michele today on breaking the code of a secret message...Guess what it said??? What is scary on Halloween? We drew pictures and wrote sentences of the scariest things on Halloween! Many students drew ghosts, zombies, mummies, and witches!

We had a great day...only 10 more until Halloween!
